If you’ve been planning a spring trip to fish near Glacier National Park and you’ve been Googling what the Flathead looks like in May, there’s a good chance you haven’t found much. Most outfitters don’t like to talk about Flathead river runoff. It doesn’t photograph well, it doesn’t make for a great pitch, and the assumption seems to be that if you mention it, people will probably choose a different month.

Runoff is real, it’s predictable in its own way, and if you’re planning a trip between mid-April and early July, you deserve an honest conversation about what you’re actually going to find when you get here.

What Runoff Actually Is

Runoff is accumulated snowpack releasing out of the mountains and moving down through the river system. It is not a malfunction or a bad year. It is one of the most important things that happens in this ecosystem annually, and every fish and hallowed hatch you’ll encounter later in summer depends on it.

What makes runoff on the Flathead more complex than people expect is that it doesn’t happen all at once. There are generally two separate “bumps” in the flow.

The first comes from low to mid-elevation snowpack melting in April or May. That water moves into the river quickly and brings turbidity with it, which is the dirt and sediment collected as water moves down through the drainages. Clear glacial water changes color, visibility drops, and volume climbs. Then that wave passes, and the river can drop back and clear for days or sometimes weeks. Then it happens again bigger this time, as high-elevation snowpack starts releasing in late May and into June. That second bump is typically the larger of the two, and it’s where you see peak flows on the main stem and forks on the Flathead.

This year, flows on the main stem went from around 3,500 CFS before snowmelt began and peaked at roughly 47,000 CFS. By mid-June, they have dropped back into the 20,000 to 25,000 CFS range and are still coming down.

How to Read Conditions

The Two Numbers That Tell You Whether the River Is Fishable

CFS stands for cubic feet per second, the standard measurement for river flow. For the main stem of the Flathead, the threshold for fishable conditions is around 25,000 CFS combined with at least two feet of clarity in the water column. Both have to be present. High clarity at high flows can have its pros and cons, but there are safety issues to consider when wading in high water. A day with low clarity at lower flows can be difficult conditions for a fishing day. 

The most reliable way we track this is through the USGS National Water Dashboard, which pulls real-time flow data from gauging stations throughout the Flathead system. Checking the gauge becomes a daily habit during spring and summer, and we also prioritize monitoring temperatures to make sure the water isn’t too warm for fish species. 

How Much Timing Varies Year to Year

The back end of runoff follows a predictable shape: steep climb up, gradual slope down. Historically, fishable conditions on the main stem return around the Fourth of July. But the actual timing shifts by several weeks depending on snowpack volume from the prior winter and how warm May and June run. This year, the river was fishable by mid-June. Last year it came into condition in early June. Some years, people are waiting until mid-July. Knowing the baseline helps, but watching the gauge in real time is what actually tells you where things stand.

 

What the Spring Season Looks Like in Practice

Before Runoff: The Early Migration Window

There’s a good fishing window before runoff shuts things down that most visitors don’t know about. The Flathead system has a migratory trout fishery, which is unusual for Montana and rare in the Inland West. Something we notice when water temperatures drop into the low 40s in fall, the cutthroat in this drainage seem to move down into Flathead Lake for the winter. In spring, as temperatures climb back into that 40 to 44 degree range, they start moving back up into the river system.

That migration historically starts in the second or third week of March. The fish are concentrated during this period because they haven’t yet spread across the 250-plus miles of river that make up this system. You won’t have a high-numbers day, but the fish showing up in early season are often the best specimens of the year. That window runs through roughly the beginning of May before runoff takes over.

During Runoff: Variable, Not Written Off

Here’s something most guides won’t say: fishing during runoff can be some of the best of the year. That doesn’t mean it’s reliable. It means conditions occasionally line up in ways that produce outstanding days.

A few days ago, we experienced a day on the water that was one of our best in the last ten years with the same client. Everything lined up. But that trip happened because of flexibility, a last-minute opening, and knowing the river well enough to recognize the window. That’s not something you can necessarily plan around from a thousand miles out.

For guests booking from a distance, the honest advice is: if you want to reduce uncertainty, plan post-Fourth of July. If you’re flexible and open to being redirected to a different water, spring can be a great time to come. Runoff Is Not a Dry Fly Situation

Runoff is not a good time to come out here if your primary goal is dry fly fishing. Turbidity reduces visibility for the fish, and they’re not actively looking up. They’re holding in softer water out of the main current and feeding subsurface. Guests who specifically want to watch fish rise to a dry fly will have a much better trip planning for mid-July through August.

 

Where We Fish When the Flathead Is Blown Out

Most outfitters in this area fish the Flathead, but when the Flathead is blown out, those operations are largely sitting still or running trips on marginal water because it’s the only water they have access to. Our guided trips were built with that problem in mind. There are several alternatives that fish well during high water on the Flathead, and they’re not fallback options, they’re legitimate fisheries.

The Thompson River

The Thompson flows out of a chain of three lakes, and that’s what makes it fish differently during runoff season. When snowmelt enters those lakes, it doesn’t move straight through into the river. It sits, and through the natural filtration effect of that water volume, turbidity drops out before the river forms at the outlet of the third lake. The water also exits from the surface of those lakes, where the sun and air temperature have had time to warm it. The result is a river that’s clearer and a few degrees warmer than the Flathead main stem during the same week. 

The Missouri River

The Missouri River below Holter Dam near Craig is the other primary option during runoff season, and tailwaters are historically your most reliable waters during this period. The dam holds back turbidity and moderates flows in ways that a free-flowing system simply can’t match. 

The tradeoff is distance. The Missouri is a longer drive from the Glacier area and it’s more technical water with more pressure and more educated fish. But it fishes consistently during the window when the Flathead is off, and for guests who are flexible about where they end up, it’s a genuinely excellent fishery.

Lakes Near Glacier

For guests who want to stay close and keep it to a half day, there are lakes in the area that fish well regardless of what the rivers are doing. On a calm morning when fish are cruising shallow water, a lake day near Glacier can be a genuinely good time. The species mix is different from the river, with grayling, cutthroat, bass, and pike all available depending on the water.

Safety During Runoff

Montana has had multiple high-water fatalities already this season. These happen every year during spring runoff, and a significant number of the people who get into serious trouble are visiting anglers who are used to small streams and have never stood next to a Western river in May. This river is at a larger scale than most visitors are used to. The water is extremely cold because it was snow hours before. When you’re dealing with cold water, cool air, and fast current simultaneously, and that combination does not leave margin for mistakes.

The Specific Hazards

Foot entrapment is one of the most serious dangers in fast water. If your foot gets wedged between rocks in powerful current, the physics work against you quickly. Strainers, trees or debris across a waterway, are dangerous because water flows through them and a person does not. In high flows, current can pin a person against a strainer in seconds.

Cold water shock is its own problem. Even strong swimmers can lose motor control quickly in water that is freezing and rushing. The initial shock can cause involuntary gasping and disorientation well before hypothermia sets in.

Waders Without a Wading Belt

If you’re wading a spring river in waders without a wading belt, you are carrying real risk. Waders that fill with water become extremely heavy and create a parachute effect in current. The wading belt, cinched at the waist, creates an air pocket that prevents the waders from filling completely. That air buys you buoyancy and time. 

Some of our best practices are to use a wading belt every time. A wading staff is also worth having if you’re not used to Western freestone rivers. A dry set of clothes in your car can be a lifesaver when you need to shed your wet layers. For DIY anglers, always carry bear spray. High runoff generates significant ambient noise near creek corridors, which shortens the distance at which a person and a bear detect each other. 

Who Should Consider Alternatives

Non-swimmers, families with young children, elderly guests, and anyone with limited mobility should have a direct conversation with their outfitter before fishing all waters water during peak runoff. We have that conversation before booking during this window. The goal is always to find an option that’s fishable and appropriate for who’s in the group. There are good options that don’t involve standing in a river at 40,000 CFS.

 

Planning a Spring Trip Without The Disappointment 

Book with someone who fishes more than one piece of water. Communicate with them in the weeks before your trip. Stay flexible about which river you end up on.

The outfitters who go quiet about runoff aren’t doing you any favors. The river does what it does regardless of what anyone publishes. What matters is whether your guide has somewhere else to take you when it does, and whether they told you the truth before you booked.
