Hybrid “Cuttbow ” Trout Prefer Swimabouts.
Recently, there was an interesting study on hybrid trout in the upper Flathead River drainage brought to you by the Daily Interlake. Local Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP) biologist teamed up to look at trout movement data to determine a few questions about hybrid trout range. Is the total range for hybrid trout is getting bigger or smaller? Are these non native trout moving higher into our local drainages or are they staying where biologist have historically documented them? All important questions as we continue to monitor the heath of our local fisheries.
With the amount of time we spend on the Flathead River system, it’s hard to not notice the recent uptick in hybrid cutthroat trout hitting the net. Some folks want anglers to remove all hybrids. Some feel there is no way to stop the hybridization of our native cutthroat trout stocks. Others, just like the way cuttbows fight. Most guides are stuck somewhere in the middle.
