December High Waters Around Glacier National Park

December, December, a Month to Remember

Mid-December 2025 will be a month to remember for river lovers, anglers, and anyone who pays attention to moving water in northwest Montana. Historically, our highest river flows occur in May and June, when spring runoff peaks and snowmelt from the previous winter surges through the Flathead River system. December is typically a time of low, cold, stable flows.

This year was anything but typical.

Beginning on December 10, 2025, an atmospheric river moved into the Flathead Valley, delivering a significant rain-on-snow event across lower-elevation terrain surrounding Glacier National Park. Nearly all early-season snowpack at lower elevations was rapidly released, sending a sudden and powerful pulse of water through local rivers.

Every river in the region responded, but the Middle Fork of the Flathead River was impacted most dramatically. According to the USGS river gauge, flows peaked at approximately 20,600 cubic feet per second (CFS)—a staggering number for mid-December. What makes this event even more remarkable is that this winter surge rivaled, and in some sections exceeded, the peak spring runoff observed earlier in 2025.

In over 21 years of working on rivers throughout the Rocky Mountains, I have never witnessed a winter high-water event of this magnitude.

Regional Impacts: Northwest Montana and the Kootenai Drainages

Fortunately, areas around Glacier National Park and the Flathead Valley avoided the worst impacts of the storm. Other parts of northwest Montana, particularly the Kootenai River drainages, experienced heavier precipitation and accelerated snowmelt. In those regions, flooding was severe, with multiple bridges washed out or deemed unsafe at the time of this writing.

While our local waters rose quickly, they receded without the same level of infrastructure damage seen farther northwest. That said, the effects on river channels and fisheries remain an open question.

What Does This Mean for Fishing and River Structure in the Flathead System?

I’ll preface this by saying I’m a fishing guide, not a hydrologist or fisheries biologist. 

Given the velocity and volume of this December event, it’s reasonable to expect channel shifting in portions of the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, particularly in areas that already experience seasonal movement during spring runoff. In the past, anglers and boaters have observed gravel bars rearranged, side channels altered, and main currents redirected during less intense spring events.

What makes 2025 unique is that we likely experienced two major scouring events in a single calendar year—spring runoff followed by an abnormal winter flood. That is something I have not seen before on these freestone rivers draining Glacier National Park.

When we return to floating and fishing these waters in the summer of 2026, it would not be surprising to find familiar runs behaving differently and certain channels moving water in new ways

 

Potential Effects on Trout, Bull Trout, and Fall Spawning Species

A question already on many anglers’ minds is how this event may affect fall-spawning fish populations in the Flathead system. Species such as bull trout and mountain whitefish.

With such a large volume of water moving through spawning tributaries, it’s possible that some incubating eggs or early fry experienced displacement. If that proves true, we may see a temporary dip in recruitment from the 2025 year class—something that could become noticeable in spawning surveys three to five years down the road.

That said, conversations with local fisheries biologists around the greater Glacier National Park region serve as an important reminder: native fish in the Flathead basin evolved alongside extreme and unpredictable hydrologic events. While this particular flood is unusual in our modern record, similar events have almost certainly occurred historically, and these species have persisted.

It’s also worth remembering that riverbed disturbance is not inherently bad. Healthy, free-flowing rivers are meant to move. Annual gravel redistribution supports spawning habitat, aquatic invertebrate production, and long-term channel complexity—all of which benefit trout and the ecosystems they depend on.

Only time will tell whether this unusual activity in our rivers will benefit or temporarily cause disruption in the Flathead river system but you can bet that is something that we are going to keep an eye on.

Looking Ahead

Only time will tell whether this December 2025 event proves beneficial, disruptive, or simply another chapter in the long story of the Flathead River system. What’s certain is that those of us who spend our lives on these waters will be paying close attention.

As anglers, guides, and stewards of these rivers, our role is to observe, adapt, and respect the natural forces that shape the places we love.
